Now that school is back, some of us may suddenly find ourselves with a few unexpected minutes alone (and some of us may not). If you’ve been putting your own needs on the back burner for years, it might surprise you that you’re not sure what to do with that time.
I have a client who sometimes gets unexpected windows of free time when her older child can tolerate school. She hadn’t had time to herself for so long, she didn’t know what to do with it.
She was out of practice with listening to her own needs.
She forgot what brought her joy.
Getting back under the covers was one option.
But she wanted a few alternatives, so we made a list of things she used to love. Anything at all.
At first, it was hard to remember.
We started to move and breathe together, awakening her body’s memory, and every once in a while I’d ask her what she loved to do before becoming a parent.
Slowly, memories surfaced.
I jotted them down as they bubbled up.
Now she keeps the list on her phone so when those moments appear, she has inspiration instead of paralysis.
What would go on your list?
Maybe you have a few minutes right now, and you feel like reading.
If so, here are some recent articles you may have missed.
You don’t have to read them all!
